Scottish Birds

Photographs of Scottish birds taken on my travels.  Sometimes I set out to get images of a particular bird, but more often it's just a case of taking the camera along on a walk, and seeing what turns up.

Waxwings

Waxwings are striking, medium-sized birds known for their sleek, crested appearance, soft brown and gray plumage, and distinctive red wax-like tips on their wing feathers. They are native to northern forests in Europe, Asia, and North America, typically feeding on berries and insects. In some winters, waxwings migrate to Scotland in large numbers, a phenomenon known as an “irruption.” These irruptions occur when food supplies in their usual habitats are scarce, prompting them to travel further south in search of sustenance. However, their visits to Scotland are irregular, depending on the availability of berries and weather conditions in their native range.
