Scottish Birds

Photographs of Scottish birds taken on my travels.  Sometimes I set out to get images of a particular bird, but more often it's just a case of taking the camera along on a walk, and seeing what turns up.

Redwings

Redwings are small thrushes, easily recognized by their reddish flanks and underwings, along with a distinctive creamy stripe above their eyes. Native to Scandinavia, Iceland, and northern Russia, they migrate to the UK, including Scotland, during the winter months to escape the harsh Arctic conditions. Their migration typically begins in late September and peaks in October, with large flocks arriving in Scotland to forage for berries, fruits, and invertebrates in hedgerows, fields, and gardens. Redwings are often seen in mixed flocks with other thrushes, such as fieldfares, and their presence is a sign of the changing seasons. By spring, they return to their breeding grounds in the north.
