Sunshine On Leith

Everybody knows the Proclaimers song – Sunshine on Leith.

Leith is Edinburgh’s port, situated where the Water of Leith, a river that runs through Edinburgh, flows into the Forth Estuary.

Leith has a character all of its own, and “Leithers” are very proud of their heritage.

The title of the proclaimers song, “Sunshine on Leith” brings a smile to the face of Leithers.

This is because the locals often refer to Leith as “Sunny Leith” – a sardonic term as Leith is very often shrouded in a sea fog from the River Forth.

Leith has a long and important history, and the first remains of a port discovered here date as far back as the 12th century.

For many years, Leith was a deprived and run down area, and some parts are still in need of regeneration –  but more recently some areas have seen quite a change.

New houses are being built, and the Shore in particular is home to some excellent restaurants and pubs.

During the summer, Cruise ships also arrive here several times a week

They dock near Ocean Terminal, a large shopping centre which is also the place where you access tours of the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Britannia is moored just to the rear of Ocean Terminal..
