Scotland is home to two species of Scottish seals: the harbour (or common) seal (Phoca vitulina) and the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus). Harbour seals are smaller and have a distinctive dog-like face, often spotted resting on sandbanks or rocky shores. Grey seals, larger and with a more elongated snout, are more numerous and can be found along Scotland’s rugged coastlines and remote islands. Both species play a vital role in the marine ecosystem and are a popular sight for wildlife enthusiasts.
