Nelson's monument on Calton Hill, Edinburgh was built in honour of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson.

The monument was constructed to commemorate Nelson's victory  at the Battle of Trafalgar, and of course his death in that battle.

The tower is supposed to represent a telescope and was built between 1807 and 1815.

A large ball was installed later, which was meant as a time signal for ships moored in the Port of Leith.

The ball raises slowly up just before 1 pm, and drops back down at exactly 1 pm.
