Red Squirrels

Red squirrels are one of Scotland's most iconic and beloved native species, known for their vibrant reddish-brown fur and tufted ears. These charming creatures are primarily found in coniferous and mixed woodlands, where they rely on a diet of seeds, nuts, and fungi. In Scotland, red squirrels face significant challenges due to habitat loss and competition from the invasive gray squirrel, which outcompetes them for resources and spreads diseases like squirrelpox. Conservation efforts, including habitat protection and gray squirrel control, are crucial to ensuring the survival of Scotland's red squirrel population.
