Elgin Cathedral – Known As The Lantern of The North
Now ruined, Elgin Cathedral was established in 1224.
It was damaged by fire in 1270, 1390 and 1402 - these fires were the results of war or attacks.
The Cathedral was rebuilt and extended, but eventually fell out of use in the middle of the sixteenth century.
The building mainly survived until there was a huge storm in 1637. This brought down part of the roof, and so the building began to rapidly decay.
Nowadays, the remains are preserved, and it is a popular visitor attraction.
